Professional Basketball Player. For five seasons (1953 to 1958), he played at the center and power forward positions in the National Basketball Association with the Philadelphia Warriors and St. Louis Hawks. Born Walter Francis Davis, he was stricken with polio at the age of nine which hindered his ability to walk. He played basketball and participated in track and field during his years at Nederland High School in Texas, and was district and regional champion in high jumping. He enrolled at Texas A&M where he excelled at basketball and track and field. He earned a spot on the United States Olympic Track and Field Team and went on to receive a gold medal with his 2.04 meter jump at the 1962 Summer Games in Helsinki, Finland. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors during the 2nd round of the 1952 NBA Draft and played in 325 career regular season games, compiling 1,558 points. At the stature of six feet, eight inches, he was one of the tallest players during his era. He experienced a world championship with the 1955-1956 NBA Champion Warriors team which included Hall of Fame players Neil Johnston. Paul Azizin and Tom Gola. He concluded his career as a member of the 1957-1958 NBA Champion St. Louis Hawks who consisted of Hall of Fame players Bob Pettit, Cliff Hagan and Slater Martin. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
