Civil War Union Army Officer. He entered his Civil War service as a Private in 1st Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry, an old and prestigious militia unit, on May 13, 1861. Mustered out on August 17, 1861, he was commissioned as Captain and commander of Company E, 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on September 16, 1861. After two and a half years of service in the field with the 2nd Pennsylvania, he was transferred to the newly-raised 20th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, and promoted to it's Lieutenant Colonel (February 23, 1864). After the regiments Colonel, John Wynkoop, was dismissed on January 1865, Gabriel Middleton assumed command, and was promoted to Colonel on March 1, 1865. He led the regiment through the end of the conflict, and was honorably mustered out on June 20, 1865.
