US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House or Representatives from Pennsylvania's 6th district for five consecutive terms, from 1903 until 1913. At age 18 he moved with his parents to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in 1864 and left in 1867 to take a position with a coal company of which his father was president. In 1870 he began an independent business career and in November 1891 he was elected treasurer of the city and county of Philadelphia, serving until 1895. In 1902 he was elected to the US House of Representatives, serving as chairman of the US House Committee on Ventilation and Acoustics during the 61st Congress. In 1912 he was not a candidate for re-nomination and upon leaving Congress in 1913, he returned to Philadelphia where he was engaged in banking. He died at the age of 68.
