John Wesley Brogden was a son of Pierce & Amy Beard Brogden. According to the 1850 Census and John H. Brogden's marriage certificate, he went by the name West. His death & burial details have not been confirmed but there are two possible cemeteries he could have been buried at. One is the Jernigan Family Cemetery and his parent's Brogden Family Cemetery.

According to an earlier Wayne County Cemetery Censuses, the Jernigan Family Cemetery is located near Mays Chapel Church on US 117 Hwy on the railroad. One stone transcribed "In Memory of West Brogden placed by a son of W.P Brogden". He could also be in an unmarked grave in the Brogden Family Cemetery, since another old cemetery census report says there are about ten.

He married Nancy Ann Jones on Aug. 4, 1867, and to this union, they had five children.
