Donald "Doc" Newell passed away on Friday November 13, 2020 at the VA Hospital in Marion at 11:15pm.

He was born March 13, 1939 in West Frankfort to Jacob and Jeanette (Dossett) Newell.


He married Mary Ellis August 6,1960 and they spent 60 years together and she survives.

They had three daughters C. (S.) Newell of Huntingtown, Maryland, Annette (Kenneth) of Weatherford, Texas, and Yvette (Scot) Hopkinsville, Kentucky. One son C. (S.) Newell of Kansas City, Kansas.


He was a Vietnam Vet and spent 20 years on the Navy. He spent another 23 years working civil service at Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas from where he retired in 1999.


He was preceded in death by a daughter Toni Kay Newell, parents, brothers Ronnie Newell and Mickey Newell, and a sister Karen Rose.


He is also survived by one brother R. Newell of Christopher, Illinois; 8 grandkids; 5 great-grandkids; several nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law; and sisters-in-law.


Graveside services will be held on Sunday November 22, 2020 in the Denning Cemetery on the Orient Road at 2:00pm.

There is no visitation and friends are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.

Military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 1961 of Orient, Zeigler Post 177, and Marion National Honor Guard.
