Lula Jo Jones was born in Bastrop, a daughter of Charlie Jones and Erma White.

A lifetime resident of Bastrop, she was baptized at an early age and a member of Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and served as Church Clerk over fifty years. She was a 1959 graduate of Emile High School, where she graduated as Salutatorian of her class. After graduation, she attended Prairie View A&M University for a year before returning home to work as a clerk with the Bastrop County Agricultural Extension Office. She retired from Bastrop County after thirty-one years of service. She then began volunteering, with the Bastrop County Emergency Food Pantry for several years before retiring a second time. Over the years she volunteered with several organizations including Pink Santa and the Bastrop Literacy Volunteer Program. She was also a member of the Lioness Club and Family Community Education program. Lula was known as the ‘go to person’; whatever you needed, if she couldn’t provide the information to you, she could certainly tell you where you needed to go to get what you needed. She loved to type and would often do the church bulletins for all the local churches. Helping and encouraging people was her passion. Lula was a strong woman of great faith in God. She loved the Lord! She loved her great-granddaughters and always had her brag book of pictures of them. She loved her family and friends, and she loved her Mount Rose Church Family.

At sunrise, on November 12, after a long, hard battle with cancer, Lula answered the Lord’s call.

She leaves to cherish her memories; her daughter, Yvonne Jones Taylor of Austell, Georgia; granddaughters, LaKisha Sanders and Brittany Taylor, both of Austell; great-granddaughters, Carla and Talia Sanders; sisters, Jesse Douglas of Austin, Texas, Sharon Jones and Arlene Jones of California; cousins, Shirley Powell and Billie Cavanaugh of Austin and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
