Publisher. He was the son of Joshua Ballinger Lippincott, a well known Philadelphia publisher and bookseller. Lippincott attended both the Penn Charter School and the Episcopal Academy of Philadelphia. He began studies at the University of Pennsylvania but left at the end of his freshman year to work his father's publishing house. He became a member of the firm in January, 1884, and after its incorporation in 1887, and his father's death in 1886, he became the president of the J. B. Lippincott Company. In addition to books, the company published "Lippincott's Monthly Magazine" which featured new work by American authors like Stephen Crane, and saw the first publication of Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray." Lippincott was a Trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, a director of the Academy of Music, and a member of the Union League.
