George was a veteran of military service during the Civil War. He enlisted on July 21, 1861 and served with the 1st Kentucky Cavalry. He was wounded Oct. 21, 1861 in the 'Battle of Wildcat Mountain', Laurel County, Kentucky, during which Union forces repelled two Confederate attacks aimed at reaching the Wilderness Road. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant Nov. 28, 1962.
