North Dakota Governor, U.S. Congressman. Graduating from the University of North Dakota, in 1921, he was a teacher, a principal and later superintendent of Litchville High School, (1922-27). Entering politics, he was a member of the North Dakota State Senate, (1931, 39, 41). In 1945, he was elected as a Republican the 23rd Governor of North Dakota, serving until 1951. As Governor, conservation programs were promoted and the state's natural resources were protected. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-second Congress, serving (1951-53). Not a candidate for reelection, President Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Department of the Interior, serving (1953-61). Retiring from public service, he lived on his farm until his death at age 68.
