DEATH OF JOSEPH H. ABBOTT
We have just learned by telegraph
of the sudden death yesterday morning
of J.H. Abbott of Columbus,
formerly register of deeds of Cherokee
county and well known to nearly all
our readers.
Mr. Abbott was about 49 years of
age,a native of Indiana and served
through the war in one of the famous
cavalry regiments of that state. He
was one of the ablest drill master in
the state of Kansas and has been
chiefly occupied during the past year
in drilling some of the best divisions
of the Uniform Rank K. of P. in Kansas
and Missouri. At the time of his death
he was a member of the orders of A.F.
and A.M., I.O.O.F., A.O.U.W., K. of P.
and John A. Dix post Grand Army of the
Republic.
He leaves a wife and family of several

BURIAL OF J.H. ABBOTT.
The funeral services of the late J.H.
Abbott, whose death was announced in
these columns last week, were amoung
the most impressive ever held in
Cherokee county. Services were held
Sunday morning at the opera house in
Columbus and were very largely attended
by members of the several orders to which
Mr. Abbott belonged. THe burial took place
at the Baxter Springs cemetery in the
afternoon, the services being preformed by
the Knights of Pythias order, of whom there
were a large number present.
The Webb City division of the uniform,
rank was present in a boy, while a
delegation of the same order from
Pittsburg and Cherokee were in attendance.
The Baxter lodge was out in full force and
there were large delegations present from
Galena and Columbus. The News was mistaken
last week in its statement regarding Mr.
Abbott's family. He left his wife and one child.
