He was shot and killed by Patrick Welsh, his foreman. Welsh claimed Peck was discharged for coming to work intoxicated. Peck became belligerent and supposedly attacked Welsh with a knife who then shot Peck in self-defense.
According to his obituary, John Peck was survived by his mother, Mrs. Polly Peck, of Simpson, one sister, Mrs. D. Weyman, of Fell Twp., and two brothers, William, of Simpson, and Curtis, N.J.
The Roosevelt Rough Rider's roster does list a John C. Peck in the 1st U. S. Volunteer Cavalry (Rough Riders) during the Spanish American War., 05/01/1898 – 09/30/1898
