US Senator. A member of the Republican Party, he served Iowa in the United States Senate from 1979 until 1985. He served as a paratrooper with the United States Army following the end of World War II and upon his return home, he attended the University of Northern Iowa. He attained his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and later received his Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance from the Arizona State University. He worked in the insurance industry prior to serving in the Iowa State Senate from 1967 until 1969. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Iowa under Governor Robert D. Ray from 1969 until 1973. He succeeded Richard Clark as US Senator of Iowa and served as the co-chairman of the Joint Economic Committee. He was defeated for reelection by Tom Harkin. After leaving office, he served as chairman of the National Credit Union Administration.
