--Son of Fred A. Boger, Sr. and wife Ollie Mae Coffey. He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, where he was on the football and track teams. He tied for state champion in pole vaulting his senior year.
--World War II Veteran; U.S. Navy. Fred enlisted in 1944 and found himself on an LSM providing support in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. He landed in Japan shortly after the bombing and was part of the occupied force when the war ended. He was recalled to active Navy duty during the Korean War from 1950-1952.
--After his military service, Fred attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College, (now Appalachian State University) on the GI Bill.
--Occupation: Educator. Fred served over 39 years in NC schools, with most of that time at South Mecklenburg High School, where he taught math, coached, and was athletic director for 22 years. The South Mecklenburg football stadium bears his name.
--He married Rosemary Barbee in 1953 in Boone, NC. The couple had 2 daughters: Linda Gail and Mary Alane. He had 3 grandchildren.
--Longtime active member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church
