He was born on July 1, 1925 to Nannie Elizabeth Porter in Ridgely, Tennessee. On May 9, 1967, he married Liliana Garrido Ponce de León, in Bogotá, Colombia. Byron's greatest joy was his wife, three children and eight grandchildren.
Byron was raised in a cotton gin town and worked hard to obtain a college education. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in accounting and began his career with Ernst & Ernst in 1956 as a Certified Public Accountant. Byron spent 15 years in Bogotá, Colombia establishing the Latin American audit practice for the firm. In Bogotá, he met and married Liliana, had his three children, learned the Spanish language and established lifelong friends. In 1977, Byron relocated to Miami, Florida. At the age of 60, Byron retired from Ernst & Ernst, and continued to work for South Miami Hospital as an internal auditor. He moved to Alachua with his wife after retirement in 2002, where he spent his golden years enjoying the rural beauty of Alachua together with his family and friends at his 'Broken Steer' farm.
Byron enjoyed gardening, and had a special interest in growing different varieties of palm trees. He also collected clocks and art, and had a love for Colombian paintings. Byron enjoyed jazz, making new friends and experiencing new cultures. He loved the finer things in life, was skilled in the art of conversation and loved a good party. He took a lot of pride in providing for his family and in celebrating his children's accomplishments.
Byron will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Liliana and their three children, Lisa (John O'Neill), Michael (Erin Gordon) and Lori Ann (Lindsay Ackerman). Byron's eight grandchildren: Kitty, Billy, Kevin, Elian, Everett, Lena, Shiloh and Ana were his inspiration and brought 'Papa Byron' the happiest memories of his life. He was preceded in his death by his sister Janet Kinkade. He is survived by his niece Nancy Kinkade, nephew Butch Kinkade and great-grand nieces, Shelly Artz and Kelly Renfro.
A celebration of Byron's life and funeral mass will be held Friday, July 29, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Madeleine Catholic Church 17155 NW US Hwy 441, High Springs, Florida 32643.
