Martin Othro Adams, dedicated family man and friend, faithful Christian servant, dutiful citizen, avid historian and patriot and accomplished attorney, died at 8:58 p.m. on Feb. 2, with family by his side in Fort Stockton.
Martin Othro Adams was born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on Oct. 9, 1942, to Doug and Lorene Adams. Born and raised in Fort Stockton, Mart developed a strong attachment to and affection for West Texas and for the community that he called home.
He attended Texas Western College (now known as the University of Texas at El Paso, UTEP), on a football scholarship, where he lettered for four years. Mart was also a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity during his college career. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1966. While attending college, Mart met his future wife, Carol Franklin of El Paso.
Mart entered the United States Army and attended officer candidate school where he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers. He returned home and married Carol in 1967. After spending a year in Vietnam he attended Saint Mary's Law School in San Antonio, Texas. [He was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1972] Upon completion of law school, Mart and Carol returned to Fort Stockton, Texas, where they settled for many years to come, started a family and where he practiced law for the next 40 years.
Mart always loved his West Texas roots and he developed lasting friendships with many wonderful people in the community throughout the years. It was important to him to give back to his community by serving through various avenues. He was a member of the J.C.'s , President of the Lions Club, he served as a member of the school board, he was appointed as City Attorney on two occasions, he was the President of the Fort Stockton Historical Society and he was an elder and member of Fort Stockton First Presbyterian Church. Mart was a virtuous leader who took pride in his community.
Mart was strongly devoted to family. It delighted him to spend time with his wife and children exploring their West Texas surroundings over the years camping, hiking and hunting for arrowheads. He adored his grandchildren and reveled in watching each of them participate in their various activities.
Mart was preceded in death by his parents, Doug and Lorene Adams; his sister, Totsie Kerr; and his grandson, Hayden Adams.
Survivors include his twin brother, Jim Adams; his wife, Carol Adams; his three children, Elaine Pollard of Brentwood, Tennessee, Martin Adams of Amarillo, Texas, and Quincy Newsom of Woodland, California; six grandchildren; and five nieces.
Mart was an exceptional son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend to all and he will be deeply missed. He profoundly impacted the lives of those who loved him and he will be forever respected and remembered for his upstanding character and his commitment to friends, family and community.
