Charles William (“Charlie”) Huffman, 71, of Hickory, North Carolina, gained his wings on Friday, November 6, 2020 at Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Charlie was born July 22, 1949, to the late Edna Campbell in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Charlie had a lifetime of fights and struggles, from being shot and burned in Vietnam, to a leg amputation years later from complications of agent orange. Charlie loved attending hotrod car shows, going camping, and watching his grandchildren participate in sports. He worked as an upholster in Hickory’s furniture industry.

In addition to his mother, Charlie was preceded in death by his stepfather, AV Lynn and many aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife and caretaker of 48 years, Rita Watts Huffman; children Shane Huffman (Wendy) of Connelly Springs, North Carolina, and Crystal West (Kenny) of Butler, Tennessee; sisters Brenda Schronce (Jake) and Robin Gibbs, both of Hickory, North Carolina; grandchildren Austin West of Butler, Tennessee, and Landon and Lanie Huffman of Connelly Springs, North Carolina; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.

We are unable to have a service at this time but will have one in the coming weeks to honor Charlie. The family extends thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville and at Fresenius Dialysis Center.
