Herman was the son of George Wesley "Wesley" Baity & Sallie Bet Sprinkle.

He married Elizabeth Chesley on 15 Mar 1930 in Hamilton Co., TX.

They had two sons, William Anthony and Philip.

Herman's obituary in the Statesville Record and Landmark describes him as an international figure with the World Health Organization and a professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and Harvard. He served as an Army officer during World War I.

Dr. Baity was graduated from the University in 1918, receiving an A. B. degree. He obtained a B. S. degree in 1922, and later an M. S. degree at Harvard in 1925. Serving during the war as a lieutenant with the first army headquarters ammunition supply, he experienced active service at St. Mihiel and the Argonne. He is now professor of sanitary and municipal engineering, in addition to being head of the civil engineering department at the University. (The Daily Tar Heel, Chapel Hill, NC., Mar 26, 1930 )
