Obituary. The Billings [MT] Gazette, Mon, 2 Mar 2015:

Ann J. Aanstad passed away Feb. 26, 2015, in her home with her granddaughter and little dog Sammy by her side.

The first of seven daughters, Anna Jensina Qualley was born Nov. 26, 1916, in Kindred, N.D., to Herman and Alma Qualley. She was baptized and confirmed at West Prairie Lutheran Church in Kindred, graduated from Leonard High in 1937 and attended business school in Fargo. She married the love of her life, Salmer O. Aanstad, on July 5, 1940, and they were together for 53 years before his death in 1994. They had one son, Salmer Herman, and raised his two daughters, Sheri and Shawnie. Ann and Sal were founding members at Atonement Lutheran Church.

Ann worked various jobs throughout the years including school teacher and farmer in North Dakota, cannery worker in Alaska, census taker and election judge in Billings, and she volunteered several thousand hours at Billings Clinic.

A lifelong animal lover, she always welcomed whatever her kids hauled home (except the tarantula!), so there was always the pitter-patter of little feet, paws, claws or flippers. She was always happiest when she was fishing, camping or traveling with her husband, Sal.

She is survived by her sisters Helma Mitchell of Fargo, N.D., and Jean (John) Geyer of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and her grandchildren Sheri Lee, Shawnie (Keith Tubergen) Aanstad, Robin (Eric) Steingruber, Michelle (Kevin) Guth, and Sterling (Sophia) Aanstad; her special niece Paula (Paul) Colarusso; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sal; son Salmer; and sisters Orpha Qualley, Dorothy Hahn, Marilyn Odegard and Ruth Odegard.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 5, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Shepherd. Memorials may be sent to Rez Dog Rescue (where most of her beloved "granddogs" were adopted from) at 218 Mountain View Blvd., Billings, MT 59101. Condolences may be left for the family at smithfuneralchapels.com .
