Parents: Francis & Edna (Olin) Thayer. Husband of Ann Dolores (Regan) Thayer. Served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and served in Pearl Harbor during WW II. He worked for Hardinge Brothers, Inc. in Elmira, New York, and moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1950, where he worked for the US Army Depot and then Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company. He retired from LOF in 1983 after 30 years of service. Dick was a member of Waterville First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher, Elder, and past member of the church Session. He was also a member of the Waterville Senior Citizens, Waterville Idlers and Loafers, Whitehouse Post #5721 VFW, and volunteered for four years with the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He enjoyed walking the towpath trail in Farnsworth Park, fishing, RV camping, and reading.
