Robert Carroll Townsend
December 18, 1940 - November 12, 2020

Robert Carroll Townsend, RC or CT to so many passed away Thursday, November 12, 2020 at Charles George VA Medical Center- Hospice facility of Asheville, NC.

Carroll was born December 18, 1940 in Watauga County to the late Fred and Ada Mann Townsend. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margaret Andrews Townsend; one son, Christopher Andrews; four brothers; and one sister.

Carroll was a man’s man, if you had the honor and privilege to know him you knew that he always told you the truth, would do anything for you and you would hear a curse word for sure. But you also knew he adored his wife Maggie and there was nothing he would not do for his children.

Carroll was a sergeant in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and served proudly from 1967 to 1969. Carroll did many things in the Army but one of duties he talked about most was going behind enemy lines and making sure every downed solider was out and brought back to the United States, firmly believing in “Leave no man behind”.

Carroll was a master upholsterer and a skilled woodworker. There was nothing Carroll could not build. He loved to work in his “building” or workshop day and night. He had every tool imaginable and loved for people to visit.

Carroll had an amazing voice and he loved to sing with Maggie. They spent many evenings in the kitchen picking the guitar and singing together. They were inseparable and shared a love that many only dream of having.

Those left to cherish his memory include one son, David Townsend and partner John David Brown of Conover; one daughter, Stacy Townsend Johnson and husband Stacy Johnson of Lenoir; one brother, Hugh Townsend and wife Reba of Granite Falls; three sisters, Teresa Andrews and Maxine Warren and husband Jack, all of Lenoir, and Patty Greene and husband Johnny of Sawmills; two grandchildren, Alex and Julia Richardson; and one great-granddaughter, Madison Richardson.

Graveside services will be held Monday, November 16, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Jim Lee.

The family will be at the cemetery thirty minutes prior to the service to welcome friends.

Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Army National Guard.

Due to COVID-19 face masks and social distancing will be required.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Charles George VA Medical Center- Hospice Facility, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805.
