Ruthie Mae Harris “Big Mama” 93, of Espanola, FL was born August 30, 1927 to Henry and Annie Mae Hill in Lamont, FL. She was united in Holy matrimony to Layfate Harris in 1946. Mrs. Harris was educated in Jefferson county School System and subsequently graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Bunnell, FL. She was trained as a nurse assistant under the leadership of Dr. Couakis. Ruthie Mae Harris was affectionately known as “Big Mama” by everyone in the community. Mrs. Harris also received training in the Atlantic Life Insurance Company under the leadership of Dr. John Frank. She was converted at an early age in Lamont, FL, relocated to Flagler County in 1952 and joined St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. G.N.A Robinson. Mrs. Harris was Superintendent of Sunday School, President and Vice President of the choir for many years, as well as President of the Missionary Society. Mother Harris was affiliated with Worthey of Heroines of Jericho, member of Pallbearer Lodge in Lamont, FL, and Eastern Star “Ruth”-Essie M. Giddens Chapter 96. She was a professional Black Businesswoman who owned and operated her own business in Bunnell, FL.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harris was preceded in eternal rest by her husband, Layfate Harris.

She leaves to cherish her many memories: daughters, Correan Harris-Reddin and Marie Harris-Smith, both of of Bunnell, FL,; Eighteen grandchildren, forty-seven great grandchildren, seventy six great-great grandchildren, nine great-great-great grandchildren, God children, Ruthie Smith and David Brinson; a host of special daughters, sons, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
