Scientist. Astonishing mathematical genius, virtually self-taught, who came to the attention of the British mathematician G. H. Hardy, who arranged a scholarship for him to Trinity College in 1914. In 1916 he was awarded a Ph. D. and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. This was mainly for his work on number theory, including work on Bernoulli numbers and the Reimannn series. He was already fatally ill, and returned to India in 1919, where he died. He was featured on an Indian postage stamp.
