James W Matthews, A.M. was a student at Hanover College in Madison, Indiana during the year 1838 where his residence is listed as Macomb, Illinois and his profession is listed as teacher. He is listed in an alumni catalog from Hanover College with a Masters of Arts degree and was undoubtedly working on his Doctorate in mathematics.
In 1853 he was hired as a teacher at McDonough College, McDonough, Illinois wherein upon the meeting of the Board of Trustees he was appointed Professor of Mathematics.
He married in 1854 to Nancy H Stewart. To this union were born four children. Florence, James W Jr., Wilford & Philip.
During the Civil War James enlisted into the Seventy-first Infantry in July1862. This regiment was mustered into the U. S. service July 26, 1862, at Camp Douglas, Ill., for three months. It moved the next day for Cairo, leaving two companies en route at Big Muddy bridge, on the Illinois Central railroad. The regiment remained ten days at Cairo, when it was ordered to Columbus, Ky., where the men, mostly from the northern part of Illinois, suffered severely from the sudden change of climate. Upon the completion of its term of service the regiment rendezvoused at Chicago, Ill., where it was mustered out on Oct. 29, 1862.

James W Matthews died at the City Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. His cause of death is listed as opium eater. According to the death certification log of the hospital he was buried in a paupers grave in the City Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. It is speculated that he may have become addicted during his time in the civil war. It appears as if his demise was of great sorrow to the family. James W Matthews children are not listed among the heirs of his father Benjamin Matthews wherein all his other siblings heirs are listed. James W Matthews died intestate, his widow attempted to file a probate claim but ended up withdrawing that claim at a later date.
