Lorin is the eldest of seven children born to Stanley Woodward Frew and Eliza Jardine. His younger siblings are John, Donald, Mabel Elizabeth, James Homer, Bill Jardine, and Mary LaRae. The family moved to Roberts, Idaho about 1929 and Lorin grew up on the family farm.
Lorin enlisted in the U.S. Navy on October 20, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He received an honorable discharge on the same day. He was employed by Paul C. Holm in Roberts, Idaho.
