Engebret Michelson was born April (25th or 27th), 1880 on the Noss farm in Aal, Hallingdal, Norway. His parents were Mikkel Olson from the Strand farm and Astrid Nilsdatter from the Skrindo farm. Mikkel and Astrid had nine children, the last when Astrid was 51 years old. Engebret was the fifth child born to them.

The oldest male born on a farm in Norway was the sibling that took it over when the father quit farming. The other siblings had to find employment elsewhere. Ola was the eldest Mikkelsen brother and took over the farm in 1897.

Three of the Mikkelsen brothers immigrated to America. Each brother took a different last name in America. Nils Mikkelson was the second born son and the first to immigrate in 1892. Engebret Michelson was the fifth born child and was the next to immigrate doing so in 1901. Ole Mikkelson Noss was the fourth born sibling and immigrated in 1910.

The 1900 Norwegian Census records show Engebret Noss as working on the Noss farm with his eldest brother listed as the head. Engebret immigrated to America and ship records show him leaving Oslo on March 9, 1901. The 1910 US Census records show him as being a hired man at the John A Holmes household in Bloomfield in Traill County, North Dakota which is close to Hillsboro. Maren Anne Tempelin who immigrated in 1909 is recorded in the 1910 Census as being employed in the Tokal Grimstvedt household in Bloomfield.

In 1910, Engebret is using the Noss last name. In 1912 when Maren Anne and he marry, they use the Michelson surname. They move to the Erik Wicken farm near Newburg, North Dakota which adjoins the Nils Mikkelson farm and start their family. Children born: Melvin Olaus, Astrid Marie, Thelma Ovidia, and Nora Oline. When Neils Mikkelson (Engebret's brother) dies in 1922, the family moves to his farm in 1923.

Anna died in November 1931. The girls kept up the home, their school and church work and finished high school in Newburg. Astrid married Olaf Vinje and they made their home in Glasgow, Montana. They had four children. Nora married Arnold Esterby and they made their home in Minot and raised their family of ten children. Thelma stayed on the farm with her father. In the fall of 1954, Engebret and Thelma bought a home in Minot and moved there, renting out the farm but retaining ownership.
