She attended Portsmouth Public Schools and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, VA in 1976. In her younger years, Berta was a Girls Scout, a 4-H Club member, and a track runner. She furthered her education and graduated from Kee Business College in data entry. Because Berta loved helping people, she changed career paths and enrolled in and graduated from nursing school. She worked in the field of caregiving and nursing for 30 years. Berta worked for Family Care, Lucas Lodge, and Mayfair House for over a decade, all in Portsmouth, VA.
On April 25, 1987 Augusta “Berta” Long married the love of her life, Edwin “Ol’ Man” Wilson, and enjoyed 33 years of marriage until his death in July 2020. Out of their union, two daughters, Iesha Monique “Mo” Wilson and Ida Shana “Uzi” Wilson, were born. On November 26, 2014, Berta became a grandmother to her beautiful beloved granddaughter Sarai Cali Stephens-Wilson. Sarai called her “NaNa” and loved spending time with her. She had a special love for her husband, two daughters, and granddaughter.
Berta was a founding member of the non-profit organization Youth Matter Inc, started in 1999 in partnership with her sisters Wilheimina Long and the late Juanita Simmons. Through her volunteer service there and in the community, from 2010 - 2017 she received the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award recognition from President Obama, and several President’s Volunteer Service Family Award recognitions when her husband and daughters volunteered in several community and YMI projects.
Things that Berta enjoyed included shopping at thrift stores, watching vintage TV shows, telling a good story in sharing history facts, hanging out with her sister and bestie Wilheimina aka Willie as she called her, and granddaughter time with Sarai.
Spending time with Sarai was her favorite pastime, taking her to school, taking her to ballet classes, taking her to the park, shopping with her, and taking her to church, to name a few activities). She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Serving the church and others was her life purpose, and she was a generous giver. Berta was known for her unique voice and love for her family.
Anyone that knew Berta, knew that she loved the Lord. She enjoyed fellowship with the saints. Everyone enjoyed Berta’s unique style of stepping during her church march in praising her Lord and Savior.
Berta was a faithful member of Christian Antioch Church in Christ in Portsmouth, VA for 27 years — a true servant of God and his people; always willing to offer a “helping hand.” There she was a Deaconess, Usher Board President, Pastor’s Aide Committee Member, and she sang in the Senior Choir.
Augusta was predeceased by her husband Edwin “Ol’Man” Wilson, parents Horace Ray and Ida Jane Long, brother Johnny Gee, sisters Juanita Long Simmons and Constavillia Long Nickerson, and sisters-in- law Deborah Long and Karen E. Wilson-Taylor, and her beloved uncle: Thomas Britt Sr.
Left to cherish her memory are two DAUGHTERS: Iesha Monique Wilson of Chesapeake, VA and Ida Shana Wilson of Portsmouth, VA; one GRANDDAUGHTER: Sarai Cali Stephens-Wilson of Chesapeake, VA; one BROTHER: Thornwell Long (Darylene) of Littleton, NC; one SISTER: Wilheimina Long (Wellington) of Chesapeake, VA; two AUNTS: Naomi Boone and Ruth Britt; one GODDAUGHTER: Lakeisha Warren (Logan) of Portsmouth, VA; Best friends Charlene Williams and Regina “Gina” Eley of Portsmouth, VA, nieces, nephews, church family (Christian Antioch Church In Christ, and a host of cousins and friends.

Two brothers-in-law: Stacey Wilson (Sophia) of Suffolk, VA and Keith Wilson of Portsmouth, VA; Ten sisters in-law: Barbara Vines of Norfolk, VA, Joyce Mccoy (Lagus) of Portsmouth, VA, Marion Garris (Dalton) of Portsmouth, VA, Christine “Judy” Wilson of Portsmouth, VA, Edwina Wilson (Edwin’s twin) of Suffolk, VA, Cherise “Gidget” Conley of Portsmouth, VA, Patrice Wilson of Portsmouth, VA, Melanie Harrell (Anthony) of Portsmouth, VA and Vanessa “Versine” Sharp of Portsmouth, VA; Special great aunt-in-law: Francis Deloatch Johnson.
