United States Army Officer. Friends nicknamed him "Buckey" for his enthusiastic and aggressive approach to life, especially a game of Faro also called "Bucking the Tiger." Was a writer, probate judge, sheriff of Yavapai County, Arizona, and then mayor of Prescott, Arizona. When the Spanish American War broke out, he volunteered. Was made a captain, and given command of Troop A which became part of the First United States Volunteer Cavalry under Colonel Theodore Roosevelt which became known as the "Rough Riders." Fatally wounded in the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba on July 2nd.
