Historian. He attended Bowdoin College in Maine and afterwards spent most of the next twenty years living in Europe, serving as the U.S. consul to Rome from 1837 to 1845. Upon returning to the United States, he taught modern languages at Brown University and lectured on United States history at Cornell University. He wrote a number of books including "Historical Studies", "Biographical Studies", "Historical View of the American Revolution", "The German Element in the War of American Independence", "A Short History of Rhode Island" and the three volume "Life of Nathanael Greene" about his famous grandfather.
