Clarice (Clare) Roberts Thompson was born April 24, 1931 to Benjamin, Jr. and Virginia Washington Roberts. She was the eleventh child born in the family. As a child, Clarice attended T. J. Austin Elementary School along with her sister Frances and niece Alecia. She then attended Emmett Scott Junior and Senior High School where she graduated in 1949.
Clarice was baptized at an early age as her father was an ordained Baptist preacher. She attended several churches he pastored as a child; and as an adult, she was a member of Liberty, Progressive, and Higher Heights Baptist Churches. As she matured in age, she joined Fairview Baptist Church which was nearer to her home. She served in various capacities at each church which included, Deaconess, Church mother, President of the Mission, choir president, and also welcomed visitors.
Clarice first united in marriage to Clement Bradley. To this union two sons, Kenneth and Paul were born. She then wed Mack (M.T.) Thompson, Jr., on February 2, 1959, a union which lasted almost fifty years until his demise in 2006. To this union, two sons were also born, Stanley (Stan) and Theodore (Spook) Thompson.
Clarice had a penchant for raising money for different causes, including fund raisers for her sons’ while attending Dogan Jr. High. She was a shrewd businesswoman and entrepreneur. She was the record keeper for her husband’s rose growing and watermelon businesses. She owned a cafe in the 1960’s at the Downbeat Café and also managed a band which included her sons. She was also the owner of an Antique and Resale shop.
Clarice enjoyed her family and friends and organized the first combined Roberts Family Reunion at Harvey Hall in 1980. She was an avid fisher woman and enjoyed traveling. She visited Galveston with her family and vacationed in Hot Springs and Shreveport often. She traveled to Alabama with her niece Wanda and to California with her nieces Phyllis and Alecia. She also enjoyed visiting the vacation home of her special nephew Gary in Avinger.
Clarice went home to be with the Lord on November 7, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Virginia Roberts, her husband, M.T. Thompson, sons, Kenneth and Paul Bradley, seven sisters: Annie Bell, Sleet, Ida Bee, Bertha Byrd, Bertha, Frances, and Josephine, and four brothers: Audrey, Bennie, James, Gentry, and one grandson, Elvin Bradley.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two sons, Stanley (Sherri), Theodore (Gale), daughter-in-law, Felicia Bradley, special daughter, Anita Gardner. Ten grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, and two god-daughters: Gloria Sneed-Scott, and Stella Jackson, and her best friend, Mrs. Jewelene Ware.
