Jon Karl Baldwin of Beckley passed away on October 29, 2020 at Ansted Center following hospitalization with an acute illness. Jon lost his mother at an early age, and contracted polio as a child. Jon used to sing with his sisters, in church, at public gatherings and at ball games. He realized at an early age that performing was in his blood.

Jon graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, and went on a trip with his father to California to look at potential colleges. Jon attended Pasadena City College, majoring in Theater Arts. While at PCC, Jon was scouted by a Warner Brothers New Talent representative.

Once his contract was up, Jon entered into the U.S. Army, completing his basic training at Fort Ord in Monterey, CA. When discharged from the service, Jon remained in the Monterey Bay area for several years, acting in several plays and summer stock. Jon also was a producer, and had a non-profit organization called the Youth Entertainment Service (Y.E.S.), which produced concerts and events.

Jon went on to tour with an international circus, as ringmaster, and lived for a year in England where he further studied acting and the performing arts. Upon leaving England, Jon returned to Beckley, where he hosted a Saturday morning children’s show. He also produced and starred in several local theater productions. Jon literally traveled the world – England, Spain, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, and Czechoslovakia, and almost all of the United States.

Jon later founded Big One Studios, and a video service that included filming the Barcelona Olympics in Spain, and the International Ultra-light Aircraft Competition. Jon was a proponent of laughter as a healing medicine, and worked closely with the Gesundheit! Institute in providing entertainment and laughter for patients.

Jon Karl was born on March 27, 1936, to the late John Milton Baldwin (Deceased) and Bernice Frances Wright-Baldwin (1902-1940). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three older sisters, Norma Jean Baldwin-Davidson (Deceased), Agnes Marie Baldwin-Whitener (1930-2005), and Juanita Baldwin-Chambers (Deceased).

He is survived by a close living cousin, Mary Sue D’Alcamo; two close living nieces, Bernice Davidson-Lowery & husband Robert Lowery, and Renna Jean Davidson; a great-nephew, Robert Wilcox, Jr.; great nieces, Ashley Mowery & companion Morgan, and Allison Mowery-Reading & husband Robert Reading; many other cousins, most living in the Carolinas.

Jon also leaves many close and long-time friends, among them David Stanley and Detlef Ulfers of Beckley, and Robert O’Sullivan of California. Robert and David were friends with Jon Karl for well over 50 years.

A memorial service will be planned at a later date due to Covid-19.
