Annette Smith (84) passed away peacefully early on November 5, 2020. She was the loving wife of Alfred E. Smith, with whom she enjoyed 50 years of marriage. She leaves behind her sons Ron (wife Sue), Tom, and Al Smith (Jennifer Hege); her younger brother Michael Warner (Jean), and her two grandchildren Therese and James Smith. Annette is remembered for the love and devotion she gave to her family and the joy that she experienced with friends.

Born in New Bern, NC on June 17, 1936, Annette was the oldest of three to James Richard and Edith (Cuthrell) Warner. In her youth, she worked with her family at their restaurant and graduated from New Bern High School in 1954. She attended East Carolina College and received an Associates degree in Business in 1956.

From there, she moved to Washington, DC to work as a secretary with the US Department of State. While working in Washington, she met her husband, Alfred, got engaged, and they married in her hometown of New Bern on June 20, 1959, and moved into an apartment in Annandale, VA.

Their first son Ronald was born in 1960, and Annette stayed home to take care of him and brothers Thomas (b. 1961) and Alfred (b. 1964) while they were still young. The family lived in Vienna, VA until 1968, when they moved to a larger house in Fairfax, VA to accommodate supporting Annette’s father-in-law, Chester Smith. Annette helped take care of Chester until his death in January, 1979.

By the time all of the children were school age, Annette went to work and began a career as a legal secretary. She worked for many years, primarily at one firm in Fairfax, until her retirement in 2001.

She was a devoted mother to her sons and supported her husband’s passion for sports, particularly baseball. She spent countless hours attending their baseball games and taking them to practices. She especially enjoyed being a scorekeeper on several of Al’s baseball teams.

For many years, Annette was active in a local bowling league and was an excellent bridge player, enjoying both the socializing and the dynamics of the game. Some of her dearest and longer term friendships were developed through her participation in the local Garden Club and Women’s Club of Fairfax.

In retirement, like her husband, she actively engaged in continued learning through enrollment in OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) classes. She enjoyed traveling with her husband (some related to Senior Softball trips, many other trips were not). She also relished attending performing arts performances.

Through the years, though, she most enjoyed spending priceless time with her family, highlighted by the holidays and vacations taken together. She was a faithful member of St. Mary of Sorrows parish in Fairfax for 50 years.

Family became even more precious to her in the last 11 years following Al’s death in 2009. She lovingly supported and consoled her mother (Edith) and younger brother (Jimmy) as they passed away in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

It was quite fitting, in 2016, that Annette chose to celebrate her 80th birthday not by having a big party (not that she didn’t enjoy parties!), but by having her family together for a vacation in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Friends will be received for a viewing on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA on Wednesday, November 11th from 10 am to noon and 2 – 4 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church, 5222 Sideburn Rd, Fairfax, VA on Thursday, November 12th at 11 am. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Historic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to OLLI at GMU or the Alzheimer’s Association. Please see the links below to make memorial contributions.

The family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to Hasana Majeed, Annette’s caregiver, for her dedication, love, and support in the last two years.
