Byrne started his career initially with the Grenadier Guards before moving to Bristol Rovers in August 1902 but did not play in the first team.
The following season, in July 1903, he moved to Southampton where in two seasons he played 5 games before joining Chelsea in August 1905, ready for their first season.

After two seasons, and just 5 first-team appearances, Byrne joined Glossop in May 1907, and over a couple of seasons he played 11 games for them before retiring in 1909.
He later returned to Bristol to settle and joined the Imperial Tobacco Company.
