On Thursday, November 5, 2020, Robert Adam Sharpe, passed from the earthly home that he built in Raleigh to his eternal home prepared for him in Heaven. Robert was proud to be a native of Burlington, NC, graduating in the first class of the new Walter Williams High School in 1952.

After High School, Robert attended Oak Ridge Military Academy for one year before entering State College, in Raleigh (N.C. State University). That is where he met the love of his life, Alice Ann Liles. He was forever indebted to Alice’s cousin, Ervin Thompson, for providing rides for the “State boys” to attend MYF at Edenton Street United Methodist Church where he met Alice. In 1955, Robert and Alice were married and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Family was very important to Robert, always keeping in touch with his Burlington family, and enjoying the love, respect, and friendship he received from Alice’s family. He loved being surrounded by his “girls.” He was first and foremost, husband to Alice, Daddy to Cindy and Donna, and Granddaddy to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Robert had a true “servant’s heart,” leaving behind a legacy of the importance of loving God, loving family, and using gifts and talents to serve others in Christian love. He was famous for making pancakes and homemade syrup. He loved the mountains, beach, snow skiing, sailing, woodworking, sharing his God-given talents with others, and especially helping other people. Robert loved being a spectator of competitive sports and was an avid Wolfpack fan. He especially loved joining with his niece, Terri Renwick, to boast to her brother, his nephew, Bob Younger, if the Wolfpack was victorious over the Tarheels. Of course, he had to take it in return if the Wolfpack didn’t win. Even after dementia stole his physical abilities and memories, he still showed his sense of humor, his kind and compassionate heart, his love of God, and desire to help others. He was well-known for the tears flowing during any emotional event whether good or not so good. He continued to tell Alice and others every day that he loved them.

Robert was employed with Dillon Supply Company for more than 40 years. He became a member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in 1955, and spent his lifetime serving God by using his many skills and servant’s heart. He was involved in many activities in the life of the church. He served on various committees, ushered for many years, helped build Habitat houses, served on mission trips to Reynosa, Mexico, and designed and helped build desks for the children in Liberia. Robert built many sets for children’s performances, Vacation Bible Schools, and programs at Edenton Street. Every Christmas for 21 years, he hung the Moravian star high in the Sanctuary.

Robert found great joy in using his skills to serve with Boy Scouts of America as an Assistant Scout Master for Troop 100, and was especially happy to work in Scouts with his grandsons, Mark John and Duke, and his son-in-law, Craig. It was definitely a happy day in the family when the proud Granddaddy stood beside Mark John as he received the rank of Eagle Scout. As a member of the Francis Asbury Sunday School Class for over 60 years, his life was blessed with cherished friends who were like family to him. In addition to Robert’s involvement at Edenton Street, he was a faithful and dedicated member of the Bible Application Class in Raleigh. The family is grateful to the kind and caring men of his small group who respectfully included Robert and “cared” for him even after he began his journey into dementia.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Robert Adam Sharpe, Sr., and Hilda Garbee Sharpe, siblings Calva Sharpe Sellars, Granville Attaway Sharpe, and Margaret Sharpe Younger, and his in-laws who loved him as their own son, James Bryant Liles and Cora Alice Liles.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by two daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” Sharpe Keen, Donna Sharpe Campbell and her husband, Craig; three grandchildren, Mark John Keen, Jr., and his wife, Cameron, Christy Ann Campbell, David Duke Campbell and his wife, Jennifer; two great-grandchildren, Eliza Grace Keen and Mark John “Jack” Keen III; sister-in-law, Jane Liles Burns; and beloved nieces and nephews, Martha Louise Sellars Avant, Baxter Sellars, Martha Sharpe, Granville Sharpe, Jr., Robert Younger, Terri Younger Renwick, and Diane Burns.

The family is grateful to the wonderful ladies who helped care for Robert at home for almost two years as his health declined - Viviane, Mary, Tameka, Quida, Cora, Veronica, Jane, and Ann. They treated him as if he was their own “Papa.” Also, a huge thanks to Dr. Brian Short, for all his compassionate care, and the Transitions Hospice Team of Vivian, Justin and others for the special care in his final months.

Because of the COVID pandemic, the funeral will be a private service in the courtyard of Edenton Street United Methodist Church, on Monday, November 9, 2020. This will be followed by burial at Montlawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory can be made to Edenton Street United Methodist Church, 228 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27603.
