Professional Hockey Player, Coach, Broadcaster. For eight seasons (1946 to 1954), he played at the right wing position in the National Hockey League with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Born Howard William Meeker, he began his hockey career with the his home team the Kitchener Greenshirts of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (1940 to 1941), prior to moving on to Stratford. His career was interrupted while he served with the Canadian Armed Services during World War and from this experience, he suffered serious injuries to both legs after a hand grenade exploded. Miraculously, he was able to continue his career three years later. He was promoted to the NHL with the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 1946-1947 season and went on to receive the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie with his 27 goal and 18 assist year. He was a contributor to three Stanley Cup titles (1947, 1948 and 1951 Maple Leafs). In 346 career regular season games, he compiled 83 goals with 102 assists. In addition to his professional hockey career, he served as a Member of Parliament for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada for the Waterloo South area from 1951 until 1953.. He served for a lengthy period as a minor league coach and served as the head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 1956-1957 season. For thirty-years, he served as a television and radio broadcaster on Hockey Night in Canada contests and was also a broadcaster for the Vancouver Canucks. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame for his contributions as a broadcaster.
