Marion proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. He worked for Proctor and Gamble and is a member of St. Peters Church.

Marion was the second child born to Mersyl and Leona Mae Frohn Thomas on August 15, 1921, in Emerson, Iowa. Marion and his older brother, Kenneth, attended a one-room schoolhouse across the road north of Walnut Grove cemetery.

The family’s house was at the top of the hill on the East side of the Emerson school district. Two more boys were born to Mersyl and Mae: Clyde and Bill. The family moved to a farm halfway between Hastings and Strahan.

The four boys went to school in a one-room schoolhouse that was at the top of the hill south from the farm. After a brother, Max was born, the five boys and their parents moved to a farm south of Strahan. Douglas was born and lived only for a few months bringing a lot of sadness to the family. The family moved to a farm south of Emerson and the boys attended the Emerson school. Then Marion’s seventh brother, Keith, was born before WWII.

When World War II started Marion was drafted into the Army and after training was sent to North Africa where he was a gunner on an anti-aircraft gun shooting down German planes. After North Africa, he was in the Italian campaign landing at Anzio beach. When the Italian campaign ended, he was brought back to the States and helped train a company of new draftees at Fort Hood in Texas. After training, the entire company was sent to the Philippines as a Field artillery company fighting the Japanese until the end of the war.

After the war, Marion worked in the stockyards and then as a 3rd-grade engineer in Omaha. He worked in Greenland twice, helping build a large Air Force Station. Each time he would spend a year in Greenland. He was a bus driver taking men back and forth to the construction site and it was so cold that he never shut the engine off on the bus. After that, he went to work at Duncan Hines where he retired.
