Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A pre-War member of famed Washington Grays militia artillery unit, only days after the war began he enlisted in the Union Army, and was commissioned Captain and commander of Company E, 23rd Pennsylvania (Thee-Month) Volunteer Infantry on April 21, 1861. He served through the three month enlistment for the regiment, and was mustered out on July 31, 1861. Rejoining the Union war effort, he was mustered in as Lieutenant Colonel of the 56th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on October 1, 1861. Promoted to Colonel on March 1, 1863, he was in command of his regiment at the July 1883 Battle of Gettysburg, where it was one of the first Union infantry regiments to relieve the beleaguered Union Cavalry on the opening day of the engagement. At 1020 AM, on July 1, 1863, he ordered his small unit of 282 men to open fire on advancing North Carolina troops. This made the 56th Pennsylvania the first Union Infantry regiment to participate in the battle. He received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General, US Volunteers on August 1, 1864 for "brave, constant and efficient services in the battles and marches of the campaign", and was honorably mustered out on July 1, 1865.
