He served in the U.S. Army Airborne during the Korean War. He had basic training at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky, went to Jump School, and got his parachute wings at Ft. Benning, Georgia, then went on to Ranger School there. During his tour of duty, he finished 44 jumps, and was a Senior Jumpmaster. He was discharged at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina.
