LANDRUM, SC - Mildred Ella McComb Petty, 93, died at her home on June 7, 2007. The funeral will be Sunday, June 10, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Landrum Presbyterian Church, 404 East Rutherford Roadm, Landrum, conducted by Rev. Jane Jenkin and Dr. A. T. Pagter. Visitation will be Saturday, June 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Petty Funeral Home, 124 North Trade Street, Landrum. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Landrum, S.C.

She was born September 28, 1913, the daughter of the late Honorable Robert Samuel and Minnie Taggart McComb at the historic family home at Fort Pickens outside Abbeville, S.C.

Mildred graduated from Winthrop College and was an educator in the Campobello and Landrum High Schools. She served on the Board of Directors of the Spartanburg Salvation Army, St. Luke's Auxiliary and on the Board of Visitors of Winthrop University. In addition, she was on the board of the Garden Clubs of South Carolina and was a prize-winning arranger of flowers. She was a past member of The SpartanburgDebutante Club, and a fundraiser for United Way and a volunteer with Operation Hope. She was past president of Petty Funeral Home, a member of the South Carolina Funeral Director's Association and a licensed funeral director.

Her heritage was Scots Presbyterian and her devotion to her church was legendary. She served terms as Elder and Deacon, Chairman of the Women of the Church, and Chairman of the Memorial and Building and Finance Committees at Landrum Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School for 63 years until age 93.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lawson "J.L." Petty II; and a son, Robert Tolly Petty of Landrum; a grandson, Cannon Harmon Jr. of Greensboro, North Carolina, who died May 5, 2007, and an infant grandson, Julius Granthm Petty; two brothers, Jmes Robert McComb of Camden, S.C., Col. William Joseph McComb of New Orleans, Louisiana; and two sisters, Frances McComb Hill of Greer, S.C., and Rebecca McComb Shuler of Greenwood, S.C.

Mildred is survived by her four children, Susan Petty-Harmon of Greensboro, John Lawson Petty III, James McComb Petty and the Honorable Joseph Taggart Petty, all of Landrum; her grandchildren, Paula Petty Dotson, Elizabeth Petty Smith, Ellen Petty Riley, John Lawson Petty IV, Margaret Petty Hutchins, Susan Stewrt Petty and Julia McCaslan Petty, all of Landrum; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Mildred McComb Petty Memorial Fund at the Salvation Army of Spartanburg, Box 2909, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
