Josephine Lopez
AUGUST 27, 1924 – NOVEMBER 5, 2020

We lost the cornerstone of our family when Josephine López lost her short-fought battle against the COVID-19 on Thursday, November 5, 2020. She was 96 years old and a 45-year breast cancer survivor, and although she was in her elder years, she was still vibrant and sharp and loved nothing more than visiting with family and friends.

Josephine was born on August 27, 1924, in Denver, Colorado, but grew up in St. Johns, Michigan, and was the third of 13 children. She was a farm worker, which is where she met and married Francis Stanley López when she was just 18 years old.

They settled in the Bellaire neighborhood of Houston, Texas in 1955, where they were longstanding members of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and raised six (6) children. It was not long before Josephine became a beloved child-care provider in the community. She also volunteered in the Holy Ghost Church food cafeteria during the late 60’s, serving hotdogs to the students, and she was a member of the Guadalupanas Society in the 70’s. She loved making arts and crafts to sell at the church bazaars every year, and as soon as it was over, she would start working on the next year’s supply. Above all, Josephine was a homemaker who loved to cook, knit and crochet, crafting and watching action films and westerns. While she was not a fan of musicals, she enjoyed all kinds of music, particularly Willie Nelson, and she loved to dance. She also had quite the green thumb and loved gardening and took great pride in the flower bed and rose bushes that she planted and cultivated in her front yard. She had a big heart, was open-minded about everything and always saw the good in people.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband of 77 years, Francis Stanley López, her son Larry López and daughter Maria Watson. She is survived by sons Frank (Lola), Ed (Sarah), Ted (Clare), John (Marina), daughter-in-law Monica López and son-in-law Mark Watson, all of whom gave her 12 grandchildren and seven (7) great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Richard (Mary) and Rodolfo (Mary) Limon, and sisters Angelita (Tacho) Hernandez and Alejandra (Pete) Villanueva.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 12, 2020 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm with a Chapel Service at 1:00 pm at Advantage Funeral Home, 7010 Chetwood Dr Houston, Texas 77081.
