Barbara Bessant Wisner , 79, a resident of St. Petersburg, Fla. for 27 years, previously of Hyattsville for 25 years, died July 22, at Northside Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla. She had just suffered a tragic fall resulting in an emergency hip replacement, slow to recover, she was overcome by respiratory failure.
Born Barbara Louise Allen, on June 27, 1930 to Uriah Allen, Jr and Edythe Allen (nee Evans) in Pa.; and raised by her grand parents, Uriah Allen, Sr. and Anna Alberta Allen (nee Kean). Known as Bobbie, she married Peter Dolge in 1948, they had one child, but divorced shortly after. Around 1952, she came to the D.C. metro area and while working for the American Chemical Company, met then married William "Bill" T. Bessant, an Air Force MP who became a Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Officer. They raised their five children in the close knit community of West Lanham Hills.
Bobbie was very involved in the community; serving as an election judge, assisting her daughters' majorette troupe at West Lanham Hills Fire Department #28; singing in the choir at Carrollton Baptist Church where the family attended; serving many terms as the community association's secretary and volunteering for many causes including the annual fund drive. After Bill's death in 1980, she moved with her son to St. Petersburg, Fla. She again became involved in her community, volunteering with eldercare programs like Meals on Wheels. She attended a new church and met a wonderful man, whom she married in 1995 and at her side to the end. Together they were very involved in causes for veterans and very active with AMVETS, traveling to many conferences and volunteering their time.
Bobbie enjoyed being active. She was a master at crosswords, Scrabble, cards and had a flair for crafts, sketching, and painting. An oil painting, by her hand, of her son as a toddler, is a family treasure. She practiced her musical skills playing her organ. She enjoyed meeting new and interesting people, dining out, bingo and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Wisner of St Petersburg, Fla.; four daughters, Paula Dolge Mullins of St. Petersburg, Fla., Cherryl Bessant of Bowie, Beverly Bessant Windsor of Owings, Leslie Bessant Strong of Hagerstown; one son, William T. Bessant, II of Palm Harbor, Fla.; one sister Irene Allen Damato of Clayton, N.C.; three step-daughters, Patricia Marie Benedict, Debroah Gail Means, and Sharon Elizabeth Wisner ; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of other cousins, grand nieces, grand nephews and friends.
Funeral arrangements were private. The family will hold a memorial gathering at a future date.
