George Kizer was born when his father's farm was about 2 miles west of Tipton, Iowa in Center Township.
His father was living in the Round Grove area of Liberty Township, Scott County in 1860 and was still living there on August 8, 1862 when George, at age 19, enlisted at Tipton. He mustered into the 24th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry on August 29, 1862.
He was Discharged for disability on Feb. 7, 1863, at Helena, Arkansas.
He died just over 4 weeks after discharge.
I have assumed that was enough time to make it home to his parents, but that is not certain.

Three brothers are buried next to each other. From left to right: George, William R Kizer, James G Kizer.

Notes:
1) A gravestone was found next to his brothers, James and William, with nothing of the name remaining. But, the age at death of 20 years 5 mos and the epitaph are clear. Together they match the transcription of George S. Kizer's gravestone at the online Scott County Cemetery Search at the Scott County Library System site. Their index includes a 1976 canvas of this Cemetery. What it shows is copied into "Inscription" below. But the year it shows, "1869," has been changed to 1863. As he was 19 on August 8, 1862, he could only have died in 1863, to be the age 20 years and 5 months still visible on the grave. Additional support for his death being 1863, is that his regiment matches the G. Kiser on the Cedar County Civil War Memorial at Tipton (on the North side). Being on the Memorial shows that he died because of the War
2) The birth was calculated from the date of death, but subtracting the years and months first, than the days. If you subtract the days first it is September 12.
