Uva Christina Haas was born on September 3, 1918; she passed away as a result of Covid on November 6, 2020. Uva lived and was loved for 102 years and 2 months. Uva was born to Carole Lee and Lorenzo Rathbun. She married Charles (Charlie) Haas on February 16, 1937. They had five children, Darrell, Billy Wayne, Judy, Kay Lynn and Charlene.
Family, faith, music, hard work and good food were cornerstones of Uva's life. Uva put family first. She provided unconditional love and support; those who received that were blessed. Uva had a strong faith in God. She ended each day on her knees in prayer for her loved ones and those in need. She was a long-standing member of the First Assembly of God Church in Danville; she could always be counted on to lend a hand there. From an early age, Uva used her voice in song to praise the Lord. She sang in church---in choirs and solo. Uva sang at many weddings and funerals, celebrating the beginnings of new lives and the ends of others. She sang many babies to sleep with sweet songs while cradled in her loving arms. In her youth, she sang as part of Billy Graham's crusades, something she was proud of. Uva also loved playing the piano and the organ. She taught piano lessons for many years, including to her own children.....sometimes a source of pride for her.....sometimes not. For many years, Uva volunteered at Lakeview Memorial Hospital; she was honored for her years of consistent service there. Many may remember Uva as a clerk at Fannie Mae or as the receptionist at the dental office of Dr. Albert Cohen, where she worked until retirement. Uva was known and appreciated for her cooking. Whether cooking for Sunday family dinners, family get-togethers, friends or church functions, Uva always prepared food that was made with love and delicious. Butter was often a mainstay in her cooking as she adhered to the practice that most everything was better with butter (and maybe a little salt). Uva found great joy in cooking for those she loved and in sharing her dishes. Uva lived a long life, with many hardships, but also full of love and happiness. As we remember her, we hold in our hearts what was important to her and commit to carrying on her legacy.
Uva is survived by her daughter, Charlene (Phil) Reed, grandchildren Scott (Lori) Haas, Gary (Jackie) Haas, Jolie (Bill) Burris, Jami Haas and Amanda Minor. She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, who are: Stephen (Mallory) Haas, Ashley (Jake) Golden, Kayla (Patrick) Runyan, Abby (Kyleer) Vance, Katie (Micheal) Palmer, Meagan (Gregg) Jolly, Cole Burris, Gretchen (Rob) McNeely, Carli Burris, Cody (Sarah) Proctor, Tyke Proctor, Olivia Haas and Sydney Haas. Son-in-law Duane (Sandy) Stewart and sisters-in-law Bertha Haas and Marilyn (Fred) Haas surrive. Ten great-great grandchildren along nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.
