Thomas “Burr” Ramsey passed away peacefully on November 4th, 2020, at the age of 91.
Born August 17, 1929 in Henderson County to Tommie and Forrest Ramsey, Burr was the oldest of four children. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger sister Pam Ramsey Brewer and is survived by his brother Jerry Bob Ramsey and sister Patsy Ramsey Pastorius.
Burr grew up in Athens and was a standout football player at Athens High School, his speed earning him the nickname “Jack Rabbit” Ramsey. It was at Athens High School where he met the love of his life and wife of 70 years, Betty Jo Slayton. Following their marriage on June 17, 1950, Burr enrolled in the Army and is a Veteran of the Korean War. After serving, he earned his associates degree in business at Henderson County Junior College. He spent his career in the oil and gas industry, but his pride and joy were his family. He was a loving father to three children, Suzette Ramsey Wavro, Jon Ramsey and Tammani Ramsey Frazier; a proud grandfather of six – Stephanie Wavro Beugelsdijk, Justin Wavro, Rain Ramsey Heitshusen, Colt Ramsey, Tristan Frazier and Sadie Frazier; and a great-grandfather of two (Jackson and Hannah Beugelsdijk).
In his spare time, Burr enjoyed spending time on the farm with Betty. He was a devoted member of the First Christian Church where he served as Deacon. Burr also enjoyed hunting and watching his favorite Dallas sports teams. He was an avid golfer, well known around the Athens Country Club. Burr’s friendship knew no bounds— his love and light will live on eternally in those so fortunate to have known him.
The family wishes to thank the Fairfield Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kindness and care they have extended to Burr over the past few years.
