She met her husband, Wade Hampton Upchurch Jr., while working for Safeco Insurance. They married August 19, 1978. JoAnn and Wade enjoyed traveling the state of Texas in their camper, visiting parks near and far. A large Texas map hangs in the hall of her home, with a pin commemorating every stop of their journey. In total, there are about 70 pins on the map. In addition to the adorned map, JoAnn also kept a journal detailing their adventures. These journal entries were accompanied by hundreds of photos.
JoAnn’s hobbies included painting, needle point, and knitting that she shared with her family… and of course, watching sports with Wade. After Wade’s passing, JoAnn spent most of her free-time playing solitaire on her computer and drinking coffee on the front porch swing while enjoying the beauty of nature and the neighborhood.
As her health declined, she resided at Alvarado Meadows Nursing home, where she was treated with great love and respect. JoAnn always had a smile on her face and assisted the staff on laundry day. JoAnn was known as a sweet and helpful person, always offering assistance to others.
JoAnn was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother… lovingly known as “Nana Jo” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents, Husband Wade Hampton Upchurch, Jr, daughter Justine Lee Howell and step granddaughter Grace Lynn Childers.
JoAnn is survived by her son, Jon Howell and wife Becky, her daughter, Joetta Leon and husband Trent, Step Sons, Tom Upchurch and wife Cheryl, Stan Upchurch and wife Cheryl, Wes Upchurch and wife Shellie, step daughter Melanie Cannon and husband Scott, 5 grandchildren, 10 step grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren with 2 on the way.
