He was born to Maxine Bowman, but was raised in an orphanage until he was adopted as a teenager by Blaine and Elizabeth Turner. With this adoption came five brothers: Wayne, Mike, Rick, Paul, and Blaine. He attended Mullen High School, then received his bachelor's degree from Metro, and finally his Master of Arts from University of Denver. He worked as a middle school teacher in Jefferson and Douglas counties, as well as Smokey Hill High School in Arapahoe County, and was a respected leader and guide for troubled youth in a detention center.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served on the board at Mullen High School.

He was a proud Army veteran who also loved music, and could play the organ and piano.

He was a devoted member of Risen Christ Catholic Parish, and one of Mullen High School's most distinguished alumni.
