Michael Ray Stokes, was born on July 17,1942 in Carroll County, TN. He was the third child of seven, born to Edd and Mabel Stokes.
After graduating from Clarksburg High School in 1960, Mike started his lifelong passion of building at R.C. Matthews Construction in Nashville. Mike then took the skills he learned there at Dupont and started his own company in 1968, M.R. Stokes, INC. He was proudly self-employed for the rest of his life. In addition to his parents, Mr. Stokes is preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Stokes Chastain.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Smith Stokes, to whom he was married on February 8, 1964; daughter, Jan Stokes Pewitt; son, Michael Ray Stokes, II; son-in-law, Woody Chastain; siblings, Nina Smith, Albert Stokes, Dick Stokes, Steve Stokes, Mary Noles, and Dennis Stokes; grandchildren, Chase Pewitt, Kenzi Pewitt, Haley Pewitt, Jessica Pewitt, Ryan Pewitt, Daniel Chastain, Rachel Chastain, and Janell, Tabitha, and Savanna Stokes; and great-grandchildren, Bentley, Grayson, Tess, Lincoln, and Brayden.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 7, 2020, at 2:00 P.M., Hendersonville Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Beech Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Gathering of Family & Friends will be held Friday from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Hendersonville Funeral Home.

The following gentlemen will serve as active pallbearers: Steve Anderson, George Snow, Wayne Scott, Paul Stokes, Richard Stokes, Daryl Butler, and Jesus Collins.
