She met Hauptmann at the age of 14 when he was discussing the music for Hanneles Ascension with her older brother, the composer Max Marschalk. At the time of their first meeting, Hauptmann was a married man with three sons, and in his “Book of Passion,” he described the crisis he was in after meeting her. From 1894 she performed as an actress with stage director, Otta Bram at th Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In 1895 she moved to the Lobe Theater in Breslau. In 1900 she gave birth to Haupton's son Benvenuto, she and Hauptmann married in September of 1904, and in 1910 a second son was born that lived only days. Even while living in a country that had an aggressive political climate, she supported peace politics. She was a devoted wife traveling about with her husband through the hardship of two World Wars and with her husband's affair with a 16 year old actress in 1905. After World War II, their residence in Silesia was no longer located in Germany but in Poland. All German citizens had to leave the area, but her husband was on his deathbed.
