Mabel Sloan Holstein, 73, a former Hecht Co. secretary, died of respiratory failure March 8 at Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

Mrs. Holstein, who lived in Clinton, was born in Asheville, N.C. She moved to the Washington area and began working at the Hecht Co. in 1950. She retired in 1988.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in District Heights, and she tended a vegetable garden.

Her husband, Alfred Holstein, Jr. died in 1975. Survivors include two children, Edward R. Holstein of Rockville and Joyce Spring of Clinton; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
