Richard Lyle Gunderson, 85, peacefully entered the glory of heaven on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Altru Hospital, following a valiant 23-day battle against Covid-19.
Richard was born to George and Eliza (Braaten) Gunderson on August 28, 1935 in rural Buxton, ND. He was baptized and confirmed at Grue Lutheran Church and graduated from Buxton High School in 1953. He attended Mayville State College, earning a BA in Social Science and minors in English and Physical Education. He joined the Air National Guard and was a Sergeant with the 191st Military Police Company. He was honorably discharged in 1978.
Beginning in1959, Richard taught high school English, Biology, and Social Studies, coached football and basketball, and directed school plays in Alberta, MN; Portland ND; and Fairmount, ND.
He earned a Master's Degree in School Counseling and Guidance from NDSU in 1964. He was a high school guidance counselor in Hector, MN; Walhalla, ND; Hillsboro, ND; and New Town, ND, where he also coached football.
Richard retired in 1997 and relocated to Grand Forks, ND. He married Jeanette Olson in 2004. They spent many years together and enjoyed traveling – attending the Norsk Hostfest, Medora Musicals, State B Basketball Tournaments, and spending winters in Mesa, AZ.
Richard was an avid sports fan, an active member and delegate for the ND Democratic Party, and, most of all, a man of deep faith who lived out Jesus' teachings through his words, actions, and unconditional love of others.
He knew he would meet Jesus in heaven and would "dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
Richard is survived by wife, Jeanette; brother George; sister Carole Eide; 5 step-children; 3 nieces; and 1 nephew.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Miriam (Jack) Zelinski and Eileen (Garvin) Anderson; niece Janna Anderson; and brother-in-law Allen Eide.
Honoring Richard's commitment to education, a scholarship is being established in his name. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the "Richard Gunderson Scholarship Fund."
