Gene attended the Tama schools and graduated from Tama High School in 1950 and married his high school sweetheart Joanne Carman on September 9, 1950, at the Tama Methodist Church.
Gene joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After leaving the service, Gene worked for Iowa Electric and Power Company in Tama and transferred to Melbourne where he was a lineman. In 1977, Gene became a line foreman and transferred back to Tama until his retirement in 1986.

Many will remember Gene for his handyman skills; especially his grandchildren who would take broken toys to Grandpa to fix. He was simply a man who had to be busy at all times. Gene enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving are his six children, Tab (Judy) Hill, of Marshalltown, Doug (Susan) Hill, of Overgaard, Arizona, Bob (Clara) Hill, of Rineyville, Kentucky, Mary (Chuck) Earhart, of Tama, Jeannie (Mike) Milam, of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Pete (Jeannie) Hill, of Story City; 17 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.
